Start with what you do have

Duplicate titles are straightforward in PA

PennDOT issues duplicate titles to the registered owner. If the car is in your name and the title is simply lost, requesting a duplicate is the cleanest route and keeps everything on paper.

Inherited, abandoned and landlord situations

Cars left behind by a tenant, a deceased relative or a previous property owner follow different rules. Do not sign anything claiming ownership you do not have — tell the buyer the true situation and let them tell you what they can legally accept.

Protect yourself at handover

Remove your plate, take a photo of the car on the truck, and keep a copy of the paperwork you sign. Cancel the insurance only after the vehicle is gone and the plate is off.
